San Joaquin County American Red Cross Volunteer Opportunities

Webmaster

Purpose: Assist Red Cross in communicating mission, services, and programs.
Key Responsibilities: Willingness to support Red Cross Mission, create website pages, maintain flow of current information to website visitors, revise and update information on the website.
Relationships: Working with Volunteer Director and other Red Cross members on website content.
Qualifications: Ability to learn and effectively use web design program, excellent organizational skills, computer skills.
Training: Red Cross orientation, on job training.
Appointed By: Volunteer Director

Reports to or Partners with: Volunteer Director
Length of Appointment: 1 year, renewable
Time Commitment: 1/2 hr/wk or as needed.
Development Opportunities: Be a valued team member of communications, keep public informed of chapter services, programs, and opportunities.

 Community Ambassador
Details:
Assist Red Cross in informing the community of the Red Cross mission to provide relief to victims of disaster and help prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Representative will set up and maintain a display table at fairs or events, respond to inquiries in an appropriate manner, record names of interested people and inform chapter.
Skills/Requirements:
• Must be willing to take training courses and attend a general 1-2 hour volunteer orientation.
• Must have a background check, be fingerprinted, and have a California driving license with a good driving record.
• Must possess ability to interact with public, answer questions and provide information on disaster services.
Time Commitment: Flexible. Could be 1-2 hours a month.

Disaster Action Team Responder
Details:
The Disaster Action Team (DAT) is the first to respond to any request for Red Cross disaster assistance. Members respond to single & multiple family residence fires. The DAT responder provides immediate emergency relief to individuals and families who have experienced a disaster. Emergency assistance can include shelter, food and clothing and is provided as needed.
Skills/Requirements: DAT members attend a minimum of five courses and obtain a certain level of experience before becoming a DAT Technician and responder.
• Must be willing to take training courses.
• Must be able to stay calm under pressure and follow direction.
• Must be flexible and a good problem solver.
• Must be compassionate and caring.
• Available for daytime or night-time shift (average 4-6 hours/week when on call).
Time Commitment: Response schedules are developed on a monthly basis. Disaster volunteers will receive the appropriate ID after completing 5 courses for DAT technician. Disaster Services Meetings are conducted monthly and your attendance is expected. Those interested in becoming DAT members, upon request, may respond as Trainees and are mentored by experienced teammate while completing their training.

Grant Writer
Purpose: Assist and support Red Cross services and programs by writing grants to fund specific projects.
Key Responsibilities: Willingness to support Red Cross Mission, research resources for potential grants, provite knowledge/skills for financial development staff in grant writing, prepare materials for a designated funder based on application guidelines.
Relationships: Working with chapter financial development employees and volunteers.
Qualifications: Knowledge or interest in learning grant writing, detail oriented, computer skills, access to internet for research.
Training: Orientation to American Red Cross, on job training in grant writing.
Length of Appointment: Minimum 1 year, renewable. Once trained may remain active as long as required training is updated.
Time Commitment: Short term projects available, 3-8 hours/week optimal. Can work from home.

Development Opportunities: Be a valued team member of Red Cross that funds services and programs, work from home, learn grant writing skills.

Grant Database Assistant

Purpose: Assist Red Cross in delivering mission by raising funds to provide relief to victims of disaster and help prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
Key Responsibilities: Willingness to support Red Cross Mission, increase number of potential funding sources for various Red Cross programs and services, prepare database of potential funding sources, enter data into excel spreadsheets from written or online sources, research via internet, telephone book, or other resources.
Qualifications: Attentive to detail, computer literate with ability to manage Excel spreadsheet, excellent internet surfing skills, understand Red Cross mission and services offered.
Training: Oriented to American Red Cross, specific training in Red Cross service for which funding in sought.
Length of appointment: Short term project. Can spread out over a period of week/month.
Time Commitment: 20 hours
Development Opportunities: Opportunity to work from home, opportunity to increase chapter's financial base through grants to support service(s).

Volunteer Orientation Presenter
Purpose: To assist Red Cross in delivering mission through orientation of its new volunteers.
Key Responsibilities: Willingness to support Red Cross Mission, knowledge of Red Cross services and programs, preparation of orientation materials, prepare classroom site for presentation.
Qualifications: Good presentation and communication skills, ability to interact with people, organized and attentive to detail, dependable.
Training: Orientation to American Red Cross, volunteer department training, brief introduction to each service department.
Reports to or Partners with: Volunteer Director
Length of Appointment: 1 year, renewable
Time Commitment: 2 hours/month, depending on number of new volunteers.
Development Opportunities: Be a valued team member of a Red Cross service that orients new volunteers, develop communication and leadership skills, cross train for other volunteer positions.

VOLUNTEER RECEPTIONIST JOB DESCRIPTION

Department:                  Administration

Reports to:                   Health, Safety and Youth Assistant

Status:                          Volunteer

Normal Hours:  8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Weekday(s) to be arranged.

 

Overview of position:

Provides customer service assistance to people who come in the office or who call.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Respond to telephone calls
  • Greet and refer visitors to the appropriate person.
  • Register people for Health and Safety classes
  • Assist with  Course Record Sheets
  • Ensure quality customer service
  • Other duties as agreed. 

Qualifications:

  • Excellent telephone skills.
  • Professional appearance and attitude. 
  • The ability to work well under pressure.
  • Patience with people who don’t understand what classes they want.

Youth Services Volunteer
Details: Adult volunteers interested in assisting with program development, recruitment, training, mentoring and serving as chaperones for the Youth Services Council events. Assist the youth in bringing their diversity, enthusiasm, energy, talents and skills to all segments of the San Joaquin County Chapter Service Area. Be informative in the service delivery system program in order to involve young people in how they can serve the community and their local chapter.
Skills/Requirements:
• Must be willing to take training courses and attend a general 1-2 hour volunteer orientation.
• Must have a background check, be fingerprinted, and have a California drivers license with a good driving record.
• Must learn state and local regulations, as well as, National American Red Cross risk and legal issues in working with youth.
Time Commitment: Weekdays, evenings and weekends availability is necessary with a minimum of 10 hours per month.

Details: Volunteer Instructor (unpaid instructor): An authorized instructor, who freely chooses to offer his or her time to instruct chapter-sponsored courses with no expectations of remuneration for the work or service done. The volunteer instructor may be reimbursed for course related expenses.
Skills/Requirements:
• Instructor volunteer Must be authorized by San Joaquin County Chapter in the specialty they wish to teach.
• Must complete a volunteer application and attend a general 1-2 hour volunteer orientation.
• Must submit to a background check and be fingerprinted.
Time Commitment: Weekdays, evenings or weekends as needed. Teach one class each month or once a year.
Time Commitment: Developed monthly.

• Must submit to a background check and be fingerprinted.
• Must be fluent in language of instruction (Spanish, Hmong, Mandarin, etc)
Time Commitment: Weekdays, evenings or weekends as needed. Teach one class each month or once a year.
Time Commitment: Developed monthly.
